The view point here is still Heaven looking down towards whatever is out there...nothingness.
And this earth was formless and void, meaning there wasn't anything here that was recognizable as what we would call earth today. There was a total emptiness in the void that we call the cosmos today. Darkness was upon it, meaning it was an all encompassing darkness. And the Spirit of God or aspect of His deity that is Creative and Powerful was moving upon the outermost area of the deep where the pent up creative force that was within God was about to be poured out when He gave the word.
The Face of the Waters seems to be more of a figurative use here, but its use for thousands of years ago becomes quite clear when you understand what was about to happen here. As I said before, since God had not spoken, What was there?, nothing. So God was working on the outer reaches of this Deep, what ever it was , almost as you would look in on an empty aquarium. There is a definite area there with it's enclosure, but it is empty, but awaiting that which you would put in it.
In the Rabbinic Anthology page 586, the King Messiah was said to be that Spirit of God that was Moving upon the face of the waters. (Pesikta Rabbati 152b)
Psalms 33:6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.
One of the overarching themes of the Bible is the separation between Light from Darkness. You see here in verse 2 that the Spirit of God is more powerful than the Darkness and that God takes Darkness and brings life and light to it at will. This is like we see Jesus doing in the New Testament where he takes men and women who are trapped by darkness of some sort and brings about an influx of Light into their beings and they are no longer in darkness.

Somewhat helped. Basically there was God and just a void. Something that is
ReplyDeletehard for me to understand since I deal with physical things/realms.
Something that is not really that important. Just something to think about.
I do know that when I die I will understand more of it.
Now my next question... vs. 2 talks says "...and darkness was upon the face
of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
My question is God is so bright that when Moses was in the presence of God
his face shone and had to be covered. So why wouldn't the spirit of God
light up the darkness?
Again, not that important of a question but one I thought of when reading.

Natalie, Remember that nothing was there yet for His spirit to illuminate yet. This realm is not His realm. His realm was illuminated with His presence, but where we are is not in His presence and not in His realm.
